To perform renal ultrasound uses sound waves, that allows us to study the renal system, which includes kidney, bladder and ureters (tube, that connect the kidneys to the bladder).
Causes of renal ultrasonography
The test is carried out to search:
- Changes in the bladder wall;
- Change the size and structure of the kidneys;
- Stones, cysts, tumors or other disorders, kidney;
- Stones in the urinary tract;
- Changes in the ureters.
The test is also done, to investigate:
- Kidneys before doing kidney biopsy (selection of kidney tissue for analysis);
- Renal blood flow (used Doppler).

Description renal ultrasonography
You will lie on the couch. The doctor will put gel on your stomach, in the area of the bladder and kidneys. The gel helps the sound waves better distributed between the ultrasound machine and body.
The ultrasound machine has a special tool, called sensor, which looks like a microphone or wand. The sensor is applied to the skin, at the place of use of the gel. The transducer sends sound waves into the body. The waves are bounced off internal organs and as an echo trapped sensor. Echo is transformed into an image, which can be seen on the monitor. The doctor examines the images of interest, and if necessary, may make them photos.
After renal ultrasonography
The gel will be wiped off the belly.
