Characteristic.

Sodium sulfacetamide is a white, odorless, crystalline powder with a slightly bitter taste.. Easily soluble in water, practically insoluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, xloroforme.

Pharmacological action.
Antimicrobial, Antibacterial, bacteriostatic.

Application.

Eye drops and ointment for external use: conjunctivitis, .Aloe, purulent corneal ulcer, prevention and treatment of neonatal ophthalmia, gonococcal and chlamydial eye disease in adults. Solution for injection: pneumonia, purulent bronchitis, urinary tract infection.

Contraindications.

Hypersensitivity, toxic and allergic reactions to sulfonamides history.

Restrictions apply.

Side effects.

Severe hypersensitivity reactions to sulfa drugs (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, fever, skin rash, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow depression).

Sulfacetamide incompatible with silver salts. The combined use of procaine and tetracaine reduces bacteriostatic effect.

Dosing and Administration.

Locally, parenterally. Locally: eye drops are instilled 1–2 drops into each conjunctival sac 4–6 times a day. Precautions.

Use of an ophthalmic ointment may delay healing of the cornea.

Patients, having an increased sensitivity to furosemide, thiazide diuretics, sulfonylurea or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, may be sensitive to sulfacetamide.
