Description of congenital rubella syndrome

Rubella – infection, caused by a virus. If a pregnant woman is infected with rubella, she can pass the infection to her unborn baby. This infection can lead to serious birth defects, miscarriage or stillbirth. Health problems due to an infection known as congenital rubella syndrome.

Causes of congenital rubella syndrome

The cause of congenital rubella syndrome is an infection with the rubella virus. The virus infects the first mother, and then during pregnancy, it goes to child and infant development interferes.

Risk factors for congenital rubella syndrome

There is a vaccine against rubella. If the mother does not have a vaccination against rubella, there is an increased risk of infection.

The infection is most dangerous for the child in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Symptoms of congenital rubella syndrome

Symptoms can vary depending on the timing of the disease. Some problems, caused by congenital rubella include:

  • Slowing of fetal growth;
  • Small head circumference;
  • Hearing loss;
  • Inflammation of the retina;
  • Problems with teeth and bone development;
  • Glaucoma;
  • Cataracts;
  • Abnormally small one or both eyes;
  • Inflammation of the uveal tract (the middle layer of the eye);
  • Heart defects;
  • Enlarged liver and spleen, including liver;
  • Neurological disorders, including developmental delay;
  • Chronic meningitis.

Diagnosis of congenital rubella syndrome

The doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history, and perform a physical examination. Additional tests may include:

  • Blood tests – to search for infection with rubella virus;
  • The pictures of internal structures – to look for problems with the brain.

Treatment of congenital rubella syndrome

Treatment will depend on the results of exposure to infection. Some eye problems, and heart disease can be treated with surgery shortly after birth. Early Intervention can also help children with hearing loss, visual or intellectual disabilities. Consult your doctor about the best method of treatment for a child.

Prevention of congenital rubella syndrome

Вакцинация матери против краснухи может предотвратить синдром врожденной краснухи. Screening for immunity may be made in the premarital period, the period of conception, or during prenatal medical examinations.

Children with congenital rubella may spread the infection. Person, in contact with a sick child should be vaccinated against rubella.
