Characteristic.

Piperazine is a strong base, pK_a 4,19, It has a salty taste, absorbs water and CO₂ from air; freely soluble in water, glycerin, Glycols, 1 g dissolved in 2 ml 95% alcohol, insoluble in ether, pH 10% aqueous solutions 10,8-11,8; the molecular weight is 86,14.

Piperazine and salts thereof have anthelminthic action; main drug piperazine, used as an anthelmintic, a piperazine adipate.

Piperazine adipate - neutral salt of piperazine and adipic acid, white crystalline powder, pleasant slightly sour taste; is stable when heated and exposed to air; dissolves slowly, soluble in water (solubility 100 ml of water at 20 °C — 5,53 g; at 30 °C — 6,61 g; at 56,3 °C — 10,14 g), solubility 100 g methanol at 25 °C — 0,02 g, slightly soluble in dilute mineral acids, practically insoluble in absolute alcohol, isopropanol, dioksane, ether; Aqueous solutions (0,2–0,01 M) have a pH 5,45; the molecular weight is 232,28.

Contraindications.

Hypersensitivity, organic diseases of the central nervous system.

Side effects.

Nausea, abdominal pain, fleeting headache.

Overdose.

Symptoms: muscular weakness, tremor. In patients with impaired renal excretory function may have neurotoxic effects.

Dosing and Administration.

Inside. When administered during ascariasis 2 on consecutive days 2 times per day 1 hours before or 0.5-1 hours after meals in the following single doses: adults - 1.5-2 g; Children up to 1 the year-on 0,2 g; 1–3 years - by 0,3 g; 4-5 Years - 0,5 g; 6-8 years 0,75 g; 9-12 Years - 1 g; 13–15 years - by 1,5 g. Possible to use 1 once a day - from 0,4 to 4 g (depending on the age) or 2 times - from 0,2 to 2 g.

When enterobioze prescribed the same dose for 5 days in a row, spend 1-3 cycles of treatment with 7-day intervals. In between cycles, it is recommended to do an enema at night to remove pinworms from the rectum - for adults 4-5 glasses of water, children - 1-3 glasses of water with the addition 0,5 teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate in a glass of water.
