Dacryocystitis (Infected Tear Duct)

What dacryocystitis?

Lacrimal sac helps to remove excess tears from the eye. It is located along the side of the nose and begins at the inner corner of the eye. Tears pass through the tear ducts into the bag and into the nasal passages. Dakriocistit – swelling and irritation of the lacrimal sac.

It causes inflammation of the lacrimal sac

Dacryocystitis occurs when a blocked tear duct. Tears are in the lacrimal sac, which can lead to proliferation of bacteria in it and infection. Tears, accumulated in the lacrimal sac, and by having the infection causes swelling and irritation.

Risk Factors dacryocystitis

Factors, which can increase the risk of a blocked tear duct:

  • Nasal polyps;
  • Local edema or infection, such as conjunctivitis and sinusitis;
  • Problems with the structure of the tear duct, such as its restriction;
  • Eye injuries or surrounding tissues.

Symptoms dacryocystitis

Inflammation of the lacrimal sac most often occurs in children and can cause the following symptoms:

  • Redness of the side of the nose near the inner corner of the eye;
  • The sensitivity and pain side of the nose near the inner corner of the eye;
  • Swelling or bump on the side of the nose;
  • Fever;
  • Mucus or pus in the corner of the eye;
  • Sticking eyelids or eyelashes after sleep, education they cover.

Diagnosis dacryocystitis

The doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history, and perform eye examination. Diagnosis can be made, based on the appearance of the eyes and the surrounding area. Treatment of dacryocystitis

If there is a blockage of the tear duct with no signs of infection, your doctor may recommend:

  • Warm compresses to the area lock;
  • Gentle massage of the lacrimal duct – It helps get rid of the blockage and accelerate the excretion of tears.

If the infection is caused by bacteria, They can be treated with antibiotics, usually in the form of eye drops and ointments. If the infection is serious, It may need intravenous antibiotics.

The reasons for blocking the tear duct should be investigated. This may require additional procedures:

  • Special balloon is introduced into the narrow tear ducts, and then inflates, expanding their;
  • Operation, to remove a blockage or create a new channel excretion of tears.

Prevention dacryocystitis

At the moment, there are no known ways to prevent dacryocystitis.
