Description of aspergillosis

Aspergillus is a type of fungus, that is distributed worldwide. Aspergillezom is called infection, called by this fungus. It can cause serious lung problems.

This the type of infection is quite rare, and is more common in people for the following reasons:

• Chronic lung disease;
• HIV infection and AIDS;
• Long-term chemotherapy;
• The use of steroids.

Most of these disorders and procedures weaken the immune system. The body becomes unable to fight infections. In these cases, the fungus can spread to other organs – eyes, sinusy (sinuses) and brain. This is a serious disease, which requires treatment.

Causes of aspergillosis

Risk factors

Risk factors include:

• Weakened immune system:
  • AIDS;
  • Medicines, used in organ transplants;
  • Some cancer treatments;
  • Long-term, high doses of cortisone;
  • Poorly functioning or low white blood cell count (neutropenia);
• Chronic lung disease:
  • Bronchiolitis;
  • Tuberculosis;
  • Sarkoidoz;
  • Histoplasmosis;
• Asthma.

Symptoms of aspergillosis

The above symptoms can be caused not only by aspergillosis, and other serious illnesses. When they occur, seek medical advice.

• Chronic cough with phlegm;
• Coughing up blood;
• Fever;
• Breathlessness;
• Wheezing.

Diagnosis of aspergillosis

The doctor asks about the symptoms and medical history, and performs a physical exam. The patient may be referred to a pulmonary specialist. Tests may include the following:

• Blood and urine tests;
• Analysis of sputum samples;
• Chest X-ray – to take a picture of structures inside the chest;
• CT scan – type of X-ray inspection, wherein the computer is used, to take pictures of the lungs;
• MRI scan – test, which uses magnetic waves, to make pictures of structures inside the body;
• Bronchoscopy – visual examination of the respiratory tract, leading into the lungs.

Treatment of aspergillosis

The underlying disease should be treated along with aspergillosis. Treatment options include:

• Medication:
  • Amphotericin B IV. Use over a long period of time may damage the kidneys;
  • Voriconazole – has proven to be highly effective for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis and is the preferred treatment option;
  • Itraconazole – is effective in some cases;
• Operation – part of a lung, perhaps, It should be removed, if it contains a large mass of mushroom.

Prevention of aspergillosis
