Glycyrrhizic acid

Pharmacological action

An antiviral agent for topical and local application. Glycyrrhizic acid active against DNA- and RNA viruses, including various Herpes simplex virus strains, Varicella zoster, human papillomavirus, citomegalovirusov. The antiviral effect is due, apparently, with the induction of interferon formation. Terminates the viral replication in the early stages, causing the output of the virion capsid, thereby preventing its penetration into cells. This is due to a selective dose-dependent inhibition of kinase phosphorylation P. It interacts with the structures of the virus, changing the different phases of the viral cycle, which is accompanied by the irreversible inactivation of viral particles (in free state cells is), blocking the introduction of active viral particles through the cell membrane into the cell, as well as violation of the ability of viruses to the synthesis of new structural components.

It inhibits the virus at concentrations, non-toxic to normal functioning cells.

Virus Strains, resistant to acyclovir and yodouridinu, highly sensitive to glycyrrhizic acid.

Also it has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and improves tissue regeneration effect as in the early manifestations of viral infection, and ulcerative forms.

Pharmacokinetics

For external and local application stored in the lesions. Systemic absorption is extremely slow, therefore, in biological fluids virtually undetectable.

Testimony

Treatment of infections of the genital organs, caused by the Herpes simplex virus type 2 (both in acute primary, and in recurrent course); treatment of skin infections, caused by the Varicella zoster virus (in a combination therapy); treatment of infections of the skin and mucous membranes, caused by human papillomavirus; treatment of nonspecific vaginitis, colpitis.

Preventing the spread of viral infections, sexually transmitted.

Dosage regimen

Individual, depending on the indication for use.

Side effect

Rarely: allergic reactions.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to glycyrrhizic acid.

Pregnancy and lactation

Application of pregnancy and lactation is possible if absolutely indicated.

In experimental studies found no embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of glycyrrhizic acid.

Cautions

In the treatment of skin infections, caused by the Varicella zoster virus, external application of glycyrrhizic acid should be combined with the ingestion of specific antiviral drugs.

During treatment is not recommended for the synthesis of interferon inducers.

If signs of irritation of the skin or mucous membranes of the treatment should be discontinued.

Drug Interactions

With simultaneous use of glycyrrhizin acid with other antiviral drugs (acyclovir, yodourydyn, interferon) marked potentiation of antiviral action.

There was no interaction with major groups of drugs, used in a combination therapy in these diseases (antibiotics and antiseptics, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs).

During treatment is not recommended to use interferonogens.
